Addendum to 1 Kings 3
By Jim Orrick

That night King Solomon went to sleep and he dreamed a dream. And behold, in his dream he was sitting behind a desk in a round room when two men and a harlot were brought before him. And the harlot was in a state of agitation. Then the harlot began to speak, saying, "My lord, one of these two men is the father of the child who is now grown large in my womb. The days are nearly fulfilled that the child should be delivered, and I am in distress, for I have no way to take care of the child. Neither of these lovers of mine will own the child to be his, and so, your majesty, we have come to you seeking your wisdom." Thus she spoke before the king.

And Solomon said, "Bring me a doctor." So they summoned a doctor before the king. And the king said, "Pull the living child from her mother's womb; but before her head is delivered, thrust a blunt object into the base of the baby's head and suction out her brain." And then Solomon waited, but no one spoke a word.

Finally the mother spoke up, "Well, yes sir, that is, of course, how we intend to take care of the child, but our problem is who is going to pay to take care of the child?"

And then, (For, as you know, strange things happen in dreams), Solomon answered, "We will."

With that, King Solomon shuddered in his sleep, and by his shuddering he was awakened out of his dream, and behold, his royal bed was wet with tears. And a great horror was upon the king. And so great was the king's horror that, he could not go back to sleep until he had sent for the woman and her child. And it was only after he had seen the mother caress her infant and had heard the mother quiet her little one with a lullaby that King Solomon could rest.
