Seeing Stars with the Promised One

Seeing Stars with the Promised One

When Abram had a vision of the word of the Lord speaking to him, he envisioned the preincarnate Christ (Gen 15:1). Abram then discussed the problem of having no child for the fulfillment of the promise of a heritage and the apparent necessity of fulfilling it with his servant, Eliezer.

Yet more than a vision happened. The language indicates it: “THEN BEHOLD, the word of the Lord CAME to him, saying, “This man shall not be your heir; but one who will come forth from your own body, he shall be your heir.”

“AND HE TOOK HIM OUTSIDE AND SAID, ‘Now look toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.’ And He said to him, ‘So shall your descendants be.’ ”

Imagine this. The preincarnate Christ, the very One who will make the promise happen, stood with Abram pointing to the stars. It was not merely a vision of Christ, but Christ Himself who showed him what the fulfillment of the promise would look like.
